Random / RNG
Many events in Children of Morta appear randomly. You can get lucky and have everything you need appear on the first go, but likely not. Some trophies may require several playthrough of area dungeons before an event may appear. Moreover, some dungeons and bosses may feel difficult on a particular run and for another run, they seem so easy. It all depends on what random drops you get.
Playable Characters
As there are 7 playable characters (though only 6 for trophy-purposes), you may find yourself using 1-2 characters through Stage 2 and then slowly working on the others solely for Omnes pro Uno. It all depends on your playstyle and no thread online will point to one character or another as "the best".
Character Name | Class Type | Advantages | Disadvantages |
---|---|---|---|
John | Melee; Sword n' Shield | Great area-of-effect ability or provides a good cleave range and will halt enemy action | Only one evasion bar His ability (shield block) may be rarely used as it only absorbs a couple of attacks and limits what abilities John can perform. |
Linda | Ranged; Bow | The only ranged class where or can be used while moving, allowing for a run n' gun playstyle Her rage ability is amazing once you invest into increase critical strike chance. | Her stamina drains quickly early game (needed for her primary attack while moving). When her stamina drains completely, she can't move and shoot again until it is completely full. Her ability is weak compared to other characters. |
Kevin | Melee; Fast Daggers | or attacks increase attacks speed over time. If you combine this with movement, you can keep the bonus up and melt bosses or groups with ease. He is the fastest character and has the highest dodge chance. | His only area-of-effect comes from . Though it has a short cooldown, it isn't immensely powerful. He has the lowest health pool of all melee charactersHis ability must be combined with Runes or other skills to unlock its power. |
Mark | Melee; Fast Unarmed | He can teleport small distances to attack enemies when using or He is fast and has good dodge capabilityHe gets a stacking armor buff upon successful hits. | His area-of-effect abilities are lacking. Both and are front cones. |
Lucy | Ranged; Spellcaster | or will increase in speed after several uses, allowing for an onslaught of damage. Her ability is one of the best in the game. It allows her to distract enemies while she shoots them from a distance.A tier one skill gives her a damage absorption shield (up to 3). This makes her the best candidate to use for Perfectionist. Her ability, paired with is an amazing combo. | She cannot move and shoot. This can make her playstyle dry and repetitive. Her can be a bit finicky. You may find that after using it, you can't use to attack. |
Joey | Melee; Slow 2-handed | He has the highest damage-per-hit of all characters. His ability allows him to clear large groups of enemies with ease. When you acquire one of his skills, he can, effectively, charge enemies with . | He has the worst movement speed of all characters His initial attack takes a moment to actually start, making a faster playstyle impossible. |
Apan | Melee; Spearmaiden | Furthest range of all melee characters. Between shielding and healing is fairly durable. Later skills add increased damage to slowed enemies making your first ability followed by or . This combo can clear massive number of enemies quickly. | Not the strongest or fastest melee character but a decent compromise. Her abilities all move her backwards slightly. On that note, she can't move and attack as well as other enemies. While she isn't as immobile as Lucy, you'll notice she isn't as maneuverable as other melee characters. |
At the start of every dungeon you pick a character to use for that dungeon run from the unlocked roster. More characters will become unlocked as you progress. Starting in the second area of the game you may notice that the character you've used in the previous dungeon is effected by "Corruption Fatigue" that reduces their max HP. This is a temporary condition meant to encourage the player to use different characters. To reduce or eliminate Corruption Fatigue on one character pick another character for the next dungeon run. Corruption Fatigue can also be immediately fixed by using a Mysterious Egg. For more information on that see the section on Belago the Odd, below.
Any ranged class can use a door "hack". You can use Linda or Lucy to lure enemies to a door and shoot through it to hit enemies on the other side. As the sections below will also indicate, enemies cannot pass through doors. This is especially effective with Lucy who can place a decoy on the hostile side of the door then escape to the safe side to attack enemies, otherwise enemies lose interest when you pass into the safe side and wander away and you may have to run back and forth to keep them in range.
Areas & Dungeons
This game has eight repeatable dungeons, across three areas, and three one-time story levels. This guide will reference these areas and dungeons throughout. Note that the 9th and final dungeon is the final boss's dungeon and it isn't a full dungeon like the other eight, nor is it repeatable. Each repeatable dungeon has 2 - 4 floors that need to be traversed until you reach the boss floor. Upon completing the boss floor, you will return to your house. Each floor has a checkpoint glyph that you can use to teleport to by holding once you have found it. This glyph is always located at the exit to the next floor and allows you to fully explore each floor and then quickly exit to the next floor when done.
Area 1 - Caeldippo Caves
1-1 - Silk Caverns
1-2 - Lost Trenches
1-3 - Anai-Dya's Dominion
Area 2 - Barahut
2-1 - City of Thieves
2-2 - The Ziggurat
2-3 - Ruins of Old Barahut
Area 3 - TerraLava
3-1 - Industrial District
3-2 - Area 30
Area 4 - OU's Temple
4-1 - Temple
Divine Items
Divine items are dungeon-only items that players pick up throughout the dungeon but cannot bring back. These items either provide a pseudo-permanent bonus (Divine Grace) or allow access to an ability (Divine Relic). As these items are lost, the bonuses and abilities are only permanent in the current dungeon. Divine items can be found on ferocious enemies, in chests, rewarded from events, or purchased from the Shopkeeper (see Bargainer). Lastly, there is a trophy related to having 10+ Divine Items equipped at a time. Thankfully, this is spread between Relics and Graces. Divine items can also be found behind gold doors:
Divine Graces
- These items provide a temporary stat bonus or effect to the player. For example, you may get increased dodge chance or health as a bonus; whereas, an effect may be a combat companion or damaging enemies upon evasion.
- There is no limit to how many Graces you can get in a dungeon; however, they are random. So you can run dungeon 2-3 and get 8 Graces and then run 2-3 again and only get 2.
- Some Graces, as mentioned, allow for companions. These Graces can make boss fights easier, especially if you're going for Perfectionist. If you do randomly get 2 or more companions in a dungeon, always attempt the boss even if you don't think you're powerful enough.
- Divine Grace effects stack with Charms.
Divine Relics
- These items give you an active ability by using or . The relics have a variety of abilities such as healing you, providing a shield, breathing fire or shooting an explosive energy ball. Initially, you can only equip one.
- Relics have a cooldown after use that varies depending on the relic. You can invest points into the Book of Rea effect Divine Relic Mastery to reduce this cooldown (see Ancient Mastery). This effect will also unlock the ability to equip two relics.
- Relics can be found from chests, ferocious enemies or purchased from the Shopkeeper.
- Relics can be very powerful in the right situations. If you are having issues with a boss fight or dungeon, having the right relic can change the outcome. Of course, they are random, so you will have to rely on your luck.
Charms
Charms are additional items to Divine Items. They sometimes have similar buffs to Divine Graces, but also have other effects. For example, a Charm may put a temporary shield on you or increase your primary damage but reduce your maximum health. Charms have to be activated with , are consumed upon use and only one Charm can be held at a time. With the charms that buff you, you could find and use the Charm multiple times, which would result in a x2 to appear next to the buff on the lower-left side of the interface. Note that you need to activate five Charms for Charming Bergson. Here are a few examples:
Runes
There are three different kind of runes you can find: Primary (or ), Secondary () and Special (). Each type has different effects on your abilities. Family traits can further unlock more variations of Runes. Geared Up requires that you have all three equip at the same time.
Primary Rune (Red)
Secondary Rune (Green)Special Rune (Teal)
Morv
Morv is the gold currency in Children of Morta. It is persistant between runs and used to purchase upgrades. Moreover, this currency is spent at your house, where gemstones (covered below), are spent in dungeons.
Workshop
This is the first upgrade station you'll invest Morv into. This will unlock after your first death (or success) in a dungeon. Initially, you'll start with only three upgrades available: Movement Speed, Damage and Health. To unlock the other five upgrades, you must defeat each area's sub-bosses (1-1, 1-2, 2-1, 2-3, and 3-1). For more information about these upgrades see Armed to the Teeth.
Book of Rea
This upgrade station is unlocked when you encounter Margaret cleansing a tablet in, likely 1-1. This will unlock your first upgrade option (as well as access to Obelisks). These upgrades are less direct on the Bergsons and will include effects such as longer duration of runes or more experience earned. See Ancient Mastery for more information.
Kill Combos
After you manage to kill enemies in close-succession of 10 or more, you'll be awarded a kill combo. At the end of the combo you'll earn bonus Morv. Don't expect to get a kill combo over 20 often as enemies can be spread out throughout the dungeon. In some events, you can post combos of 50 or more, but again, those are rare. The kill combo counter will appear at the bottom of your screen.
Gemstones
You'll feel, early in the game, that you never have enough Gemstones. Later, around TerraLava, you'll have too many and often will go into a boss with extras that you couldn't use. Gemstones are random drops from any enemy or chest (or given by the NPC related to Stargazer). They are used to buy items from the Shopkeeper, repair runes from the Runemender and gamble with the Blackmarketeer. In addition to these purchases, you can also open gem chests with them.
Gem chests tend to have more Morv and better items than normal chests. You can get Divine Items, Rune, Animal Treats, and Charms from theses chests.
Lucy has unique traits that give all family members 1-2 Gemstones when they start a dungeon (one at level 4, and two at level 20). This is a great perk when you're hunting for Geared Up, Charming Bergson and Faithful.
Obelisks
These are statues that found throughout dungeons. They mostly provide temporary, but powerful buffs to your character. They must first be activated via an event that unlocks the Book of Rea (see Ancient Mastery for more information). A full breakdown of each Obelisk can be found under Master of the Obelisk.
Events
Events are part of the core game content. They serve to provide lore, side quests, or items. Events, asides from Belago, are always behind glowing doors. Enemies cannot follow you through these doors (and sometimes these doors will lock if the event has combat).
Puzzle
These events are games that the character needs to complete in order to receive a reward. They are the most common event found in the game and are repeatable. These events consist of memory, luck and pong games. See Most Curious for more information and examples.
Challenge
These events are arena-like rooms where you are pitted against multiple waves of enemies. If you survive you will be rewarded with a treasure or you will rescue an NPC (Bargainer, Runemenderand Gambler). The challenge rooms are denoted by a specific symbol (unique to any other event room)
You need to complete 10 of these events to earn Challenger.
Souvenir
These are short one-time events where you be treated to a cutscene, likely combat, and then an event end. The event will reward an item called a souvenir which will appear in your home. These souvenirs provide no bonuses but are required for Scavenger. If the event is failed, it can appear again in the same area (i.e. if you fail the escort in Caeldippo Caves, you can find the same event again in a Caeldippo Caves dungeon).
Belago the Odd
This is a random event that is found behind a strange portal. This portal can be found anywhere on a dungeon floor and will teleport you to a mini dungeon floor. This floor has an event where you chase a bird, Belago, through the floor. You must be quick and follow the golden footsteps. You will need to run passed all the enemies encountered to reach Belago in time. If you do catch her, she will award you with a Mysterious Egg. This item can be used to reset your skill points or cleanse Corruption Fatigue from one character. The latter being quite handy if you have a preferred character.
Event Chains
These events are all tied to a trophy (such as A New Member). You will trigger first event, then you'll trigger the next and so forth until the chain is done. You can never find event #2 before you complete event #1 in chains.
In-Run Events
These events are tied to another member of the Bergson family needing help in the dungeon. It could be as simple as finding an item or a bit more involved like fighting waves of enemies. Either way, these events are numerous, but not as common to find as Puzzle events. These events are tied to the Adventurer and Explorer trophies.
Non-trophy related
These events are mostly story related. You'll often to be treated to a short cutscene or narrative. These events are mostly one-time with the exception being the murals. If you don't see any information about a specific event within this guide, you can assume it is not related to a trophy.
DLC: Paws and Claws
This DLC does not bring more trophies but it does give access to another part of the house: Animal Shelter. This DLC is completely optional; however, you can speed up your platinum by investing in this DLC. Furthermore, the proceeds from this DLC go to the Humane Society International Charity (PSNP Source [Credit Abby_TheLastOfUs]). Now the Animal Shelter provides bonuses when the animals are cared for. There are five different animals: Cat, Deer, Owl, Wolf Cub, and Fish. These grant bonuses to critical strike chance, experience earned, movement speed, luck, and dodge chance, respectively. You must give an animal an animal treat (common or rare). These treats can drop from any chest / cache in a dungeon. Treats increase the hearts an animal has, unlocking different bonus levels. Each animal has three bonus levels. For example, the Deer gives 10% experience earned at level 1, 15% at level 2 and 20% at level 3. Level 1 & 2 can be earned by giving it enough treats. In order to unlock level 3, you must give it a rare treat when its hearts are full. The animals hearts will reduce each time you return home from a dungeon.
