Crime Numbers

The Criminal Justice Services Division of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency publishes crime statistics for all the counties in the state. It latest report shows that there were 2 murders, 3 rapes, 11 robberies, and 105 aggravated assaults in Tuscaloosa County in 2020. Property crimes for that year include 148 burglaries, 337 larcenies, and 81 motor vehicle thefts.

Murder (14.3%), rape (13.7%), aggravated assault (2.1%), and motor vehicle theft (26.2%) rates increased in Tuscaloosa County over the five-year period from 2013 to 2017. In the same period, robbery rate declined by 7.6% and burglary and larceny-theft rates dropped by 25.6% and 5.2% respectively.

Crime Records

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) provides employers in the state with an online tool for checking the criminal histories of prospective and current employees. To use these tool, employers and their agencies must subscribe to the Alabama Criminal History Search System. Vital Records

Divorce decrees and copies of divorce judgments are available from the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office. To obtain copies of these records, follow the same procedure described above for obtaining circuit court records. Fees are also the same.

The Tuscaloosa County Health Department processes requests for certified copies of marriage, divorce, birth, and death certificates. To request copies of any of these vital records, start by downloading and completing a Vital Records Request Form. Fill the appropriate section for the vital record being requested. Use a request form for only one type of vital record. Do not request more than one certificate on a form.

Each copy of these vital records costs $15. This fee covers the search cost and the cost of a certified copy. Each additional copy of the same record costs $6. Fees are payable with check or money order made out to State Board of Health.

Requests for birth certificates less than 125 years and death certificates less than 25 years must be accompanied by acceptable photo identification. The right to obtain copies of birth and death certificates is also restricted to family members and any other person who has the legal right to do so.
